The 1963 Chichester Festival production of the classic Chekhov play is recorded in this oddly uninteresting film. The direction keeps most of the action confined to closeups and two-shots, and the audience loses any sense of where the characters are in relation to each other and the larger
space of the stage. What does show through of the original production (with its amazing cast) is still worth watching for theater fans.
