Uncle Tom's Cabin: Review

The classic tale of slavery and plantations in the South is brought to the screen by veteran Hungarian director Radvanyi, who chose to film in Yogoslavia. It doesn't take a geography major to notice that Yugoslavia doesn't pass for Kentucky and that Serbians don't look like black slaves. This tale of life among the lowly, while keenly acted, suffers from endless historical inaccuracies and a tendency to wander too far from the original material. Author Stowe's powerful but provincial tale here has turned epic, with such additions as the assassination of Abraham Lincoln intended to reinforce the political ferment of the period. The music is an odd mix, with Jerome Kern's "Old Man River" blending badly with Aram Khatchaturian's "Sword Dance." Oddly, this is the only sound version (with the exception of a 1987 cable production), although eight silent movies were filmed. leave a comment
