Keeping within the traditional Western format, director Robert Aldrich transforms the material into an effective allegory of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Burt Lancaster stars as a hard-riding scout who accompanies an idealistic young lieutenant (Bruce Davison) in pursuit of a band of renegade Apaches.
