Shot independently in 1981, this funny, quirky, wholly likable little film sat on the shelf until 1985 when Universal finally decided to release it. Unfortunately, the film was given little fanfare and failed to find an audience--which is a shame, for UFORIA is a wonderfully offbeat comedy that manages to capture the eccentricities of small-town America. Set in the deserts of the Southwest, the film follows Sheldon (Fred Ward), a happy-go-lucky drifter whose wanderings bring him to a dusty desert town. In the grocery store he meets Arlene (Cindy Williams), a somewhat dippy cashier whose born-again Christianity combines faith in Jesus Christ with a strong belief that UFOs are the chariots of God. In a matter of days Sheldon has moved into Arlene's tiny trailer home. Also in town is Sheldon's seedy cousin (Harry Dean Stanton), whose latest con has put him on the evangelical bandwagon. Calling himself "Brother Bud," he has gathered a flock of the faithful who come to his tent meetings for a little preachin' and healin' in exchange for sizable donations. UFORIA is an engaging movie that has great affection for all its quirky characters. The cast is superb--with Ward, Williams, and Stanton taking top honors. leave a comment
