Two Tickets To Broadway: Review
The story is a familiar one, but, energetically delivered and offering some nice comic touches, TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY is enjoyable, if vacuous, entertainment. The fun begins in Pelican Falls, Vermont, where seemingly the whole town has come to bid farewell to Nancy Peterson (Janet Leigh), off to try her luck on Broadway. She hooks up with "Foxy" Rogers (Barbara Lawrence), Hannah Holbrook (Gloria DeHaven), and Joyce Campbell (Ann Miller), a trio of performers whose ineffectual manager, Lew Conway (Eddie Bracken), has led them to believe that he can get them an appearance on Bob Crosby's TV show. Nancy joins the act, performs in a benefit show, and becomes involved with another of Lew's clients, singer Dan Carter (Tony Martin), but, after telling everyone back home that she's going to be on TV, she learns that Lew has tried to foist off an unemployed actor as Crosby's manager. Assuming that Dan is part of the deception, she breaks up with him, and he takes it upon himself to set everything right. Famed vaudevillians Joe Smith and Charles Dale (who were the inspiration for THE SUNSHINE BOYS) do well in their small roles as delicatessen owners. Viewers with sharp eyes will note bit parts being played by Vera Miles, George Nader, Joan Shawlee, and Joi Lansing. Inventive choreography by Busby Berkeley and a clever script apparently weren't much of draw for contemporary moviegoers, so TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY ended up losing money for producer Howard Hughes. Nominated for Best Sound Recording by the Academy. Tunes from various writers include "Let the Worry Bird Worry for You" (Jule Styne, Leo Robin, performed by Lawrence, DeHaven, Miller), "Pagliacci" (Leoncavallo, sung by Tony Martin), "There's No Tomorrow" (Leon Carr, Al Hoffman, Leo Corday, sung by Martin), "Manhattan" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, sung by Martin), "Big Chief Hole in the Ground" (Styne, Robin, performed by Miller, Lawrence, DeHaven). Other tunes by Styne and Robin were "The Closer You Are," "Baby, You'll Never Be Sorry," "Pelican Falls High," "It Began in Yucatan," and "Are You a Beautiful Dream?" Sammy Cahn and Bob Crosby wrote "Let's Make Comparisons" (sung by Crosby and his BobCats).
