The 1986 directing debut of Jane Campion ( THE PIANO) is a sharply observed, decidedly unusual story of a friendship between two very different young women. Louise (Emma Coles) is a serious, sensitive girl with her eye on the future; Kelly (Kris Bidenko) is a punked-out rebel heading nowhere fast. Their declining relationship is tracked in chronological reverse, so we know how it ends long before we're shown how it began. But this is no gimmicky formal exercise: The leads are excellent, and Campion's take on the interplay between friendship and broader social ties is compelling and consistently surprising. leave a comment
