The last and best of the Hammer "Karnstein" trilogy, TWINS OF EVIL features Madeleine and Mary Collinson, the first twin centerfold girls for Playboy, as Frieda and Maria Gellhorn, a pair of orphans who come to visit their repressive Witchfinder General uncle, Gustav Weil (Peter Cushing). He lives near Karnstein Castle, and, of course, that means evil lurks just around the corner. Frieda, the more outgoing and adventurous of the twins, becomes curious about the old castle and takes a look around the place. There she meets Count Karnstein (Damien Thomas), a handsome young man who also happens to be a satanist. During a demonic rite, the young count inadvertently resurrects his ancestor Mircalla and is promptly vampirized. Karnstein then vampirizes Frieda, who ventures out to suck the blood of the locals. The puritanical Weil finally catches up with his niece and imprisons her, but Karnstein installs the innocent Maria in her place, setting up the exciting climax in which Maria may be burned at the stake for the crimes of her twin. Fueled by a great performance from Cushing as the zealous witchfinder, TWINS OF EVIL is an effective examination of the conflict between repression and hedonism. Director John Hough, who made his mark in several episodes of the popular television series "The Avengers," keeps things moving at a brisk pace and stages the scenes of horror with considerable panache. Released by Universal in the US, the studio butchered the British print, removing all of the sex and most of the violence. Luckily, the print available on videocassette is the uncut British version. leave a comment
