TWIN TOWN
starstarstarstar
A curious, dark farce set in the rundown seaside town of Swansea, Wales, whose viciously anarchic impulses are more disturbing than humorous. Julian and Jeremy Lewis (real-life brothers Llyr Evans and Rhys Ifans) -- brothers whom everyone calls "the twins" for no sensible reason -- are die-hard hell-raisers. They're unrepentant car thieves, penny-ante drug dealers, layabouts, prank-pullers and all-around snotty little creeps. They run afoul of self-important local big-shot Bryn Cartwright (William Thomas) and trigger a feud that escalates brutally after bad cop Terry (Dougray Scott) tries to kill their dog and winds up doing much worse. This rather sour comedy by actor/documentary filmmaker Kevin Allen, misleadingly touted as "the Welsh TRAINSPOTTING, asks viewers to like the loutish Lewis boys because they're loyal to their fat old dad (Huw Ceredig) and to laugh at an increasingly unfunny series of cruel mishaps and tit-for-tat acts of vengeance: A poodle's head on the pillow (a crude homage to THE GODFATHER) is only the beginning. It's all unquestionably stylish and occasionally bitingly clever, but not half clever enough to make its unpleasantness palatable. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
