The film pulled in an estimated $26.3 million from its midnight showings, breaking the record previously held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($22.2 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The second film in the Twilight series opened in 3,514 theaters, earning approximately $7,476 per screen. The film will expand to 4,024 theaters for the weekend.

Fans looking forward to the Nov. 20 premiere of the Twilight sequel already are snapping up the soundtrack.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon — Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released Oct.16, debuting at No. 1 on iTunes. The first Twilight soundtrack sold more than 3.5 million copies, a figure that made New Moon one of the year's most highly anticipated soundtracks. The album features new tracks from The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie and Muse, a group that contributed to the initial Twilight soundtrack too. The album's lead-off single, "Meet Me On The Equinox" by Death Cab For Cutie, has been making its way up the Billboard rock chart.

Werewolf? There, wolf! So squealed Twilight fans as they caught glimpse of the first trailer for New Moon, which was sneak-peeked at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards.
In the clip (posted below), the tortured twosome of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) reach a crossroads when a drop of Bella's blood turns her birthday party into a near feeding frenzy. Soon after, Edward makes the difficult decision to excuse himself from his beloved's life.
That opens the door for Taylor Lautner's Jacob to sniff around Bella — and protect her needed, as seen in the final, primal moment of this premiere preview.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon will have fan girls howling November 20, when it hits theaters.
