Hudson is an alcoholic, court-martialed ship's captain, reduced to running a leaky two-masted schooner between a South Seas island and Honolulu. He takes on the usual slice-of-life group and suffers the usual skullduggery and natural disasters found in films like this. Charisse is a prostitute on the run, Kennedy is the untrustworthy first mate, and McGraw is a crew member who wants to mutiny. The performances are adequate for the fare, and occasional excitement is tossed in, but mostly this is a nonsuspenseful thriller that quickly becomes as creaky as the ship it takes place on. The film was adapted by Gann from his novel, which was similar to his much better THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, essentially the same story aboard a doomed airliner but much better told. leave a comment
