Tuff Turf

Pseudo-hip, essentially conventional teen melodrama about Morgan Hiller (James Spader), a tough but brainy rich kid from Connecticut whose financially ruined family relocates in Los Angeles. Morgan gets in trouble right off the bat (a la REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE) when he interferes with a street gang pulling a stickup. The leader of "The Tuffs," Nick Hauser (Paul Mones), vows to get revenge on Morgan, while gang deb Frankie (Kim Richards) gets starry-eyed over the rich kid. Conflict and romance escalate predictably. Director Fritz Kiersch, who had previously helmed the dreadful Stephen King adaptation CHILDREN OF THE CORN (1984), goes from CORN to corny. TUFF TURF is so relentlessly derivative that its good points--chiefly an attractive, relatively talented cast--are buried in cliche. leave a comment
