Underrated at the time of release, this fascinating neo-noir, set in Los Angeles in the 1940s, features the first on-screen teaming of Robert De Niro and Robert Duvall. Duvall stars as a hard-boiled homicide detective whose investigation into the grisly murder of a porno starlet leads him to believe that his brother (De Niro), an ambitious Catholic monsignor, is involved with his chief suspect, a corrupt local businessman (Charles Durning).
