The adventures of a French country girl-turned-entrepreneur are chronicled in this, Joseph Losey's penultimate film (STEAMING [1985] was his last). Isabelle Huppert stars as Frederique, who, as the film opens, works on her father's trout farm and exploits her male coworkers' lust, on a look-but-don't-touch basis, for money. She marries Galuchat (Jacques Speisser), a latent homosexual with whom she has a close but unconsummated relationship. The pair falls in with some rich friends, and Frederique goes off with one of them to Japan, where, again, the promise of an affair is never fulfilled. After Galuchat tries to kill himself, she returns home, and the couple is taken in by the wealthy Rambert (Jean-Pierre Cassel) and his wife, Lou (Jeanne Moreau), in a strange menage that ends when Rambert, frustrated by Frederique's sexual indifference, kills Lou. Finally, Frederique settles down with Galuchat, now an alcoholic, to run a highly lucrative Japanese trout farm. Losey had wanted to film Roger Vailland's novel for years, and the director's familiar concern with sex and class as expressions of power, egotism vs. love, and spiritual corruption is in place. These themes are somewhat undercut, however, by his ever-stylish direction and the gorgeous visuals from cinematographer Henri Alekan and production designer Alexandre Trauner. Huppert's character is essentially a mystery, and she gives an appropriately enigmatic performance, keeping the audience at an emotional distance. Described by Losey as his "most open-ended" film, THE TROUT is intriguing and beautiful to watch, but ultimately unsatisfying. (In French; English subtitles.) leave a comment
