The Trout

The adventures of a French country girl-turned-entrepreneur are chronicled in this, Joseph Losey's penultimate film (STEAMING [1985] was his last). Isabelle Huppert stars as Frederique, who, as the film opens, works on her father's trout farm and exploits her male coworkers' lust, on a look-but-don't-touch basis, for money. She marries Galuchat (Jacques Speisser), a latent homosexual with whom she has a close but unconsummated relationship. The pair falls in with some rich friends, and Frederique goes off with one of them to Japan, where, again, the promise of an affair is never fulfilled.
