Welles arrives from Brazil to inherit some Scottish land, but he quickly antagonizes the locals by closing a highway that runs through the estate, evicting some tinkers who have long lived on the land, and upsetting crippled girl McCourt, who asks a visiting US Air Force major, Tucker, to help settle the matter. The displaced tinkers, led by McLaglen and son McCallum, strike back by burning Welles in effigy and stealing his prize cow. Welles escalates the war by importing a gang of Glaswegian thugs. A full-scale battle is avoided, though, when Welles admits he has been wrong and works to get along with the natives. Tucker falls in love with Lockwood, Welles's daughter, and is eventually revealed to be the father of McCourt. This inferior comedy tries to emulate THE QUIET MAN (1952), right down to hiring the same screenwriter, Nugent, to adapt the work of the same author, Walsh, but whatever they brought to this misfired project, it was not enough. No one but Welles seems to take any real interest in what he's doing, and Welles, though he hams it up endearingly, sits under a bouffant hairdo that could make anyone look ridiculous. This was the second film Welles made purely for the money with producer-director Wilcox. One can be generous and assume that the rest of the cast had a similar motive. Some nice color photography of the Scottish landscape starts the picture, but it then moves into horribly artificial-looking studio exteriors for the rest of the story. A film barely worth remembering. leave a comment
