Shelley Long stars as Phyllis Nefler, a spoiled Beverly Hills resident who does nothing but shop, shop, shop, prompting her husband (Craig T. Nelson) to tell her he's fed up with her selfishness. To prove him wrong, she assumes leadership of Troop Beverly Hills in the Girl Scout-like Wilderness Girls organization. Troop Beverly Hills is made up of brats who fail at every rugged task and have become the laughingstock of the scouting community, but Phyllis tries to whip them into shape through such unorthodox means as outrageous shopping sprees and dancing lessons. The premise of TROOP BEVERLY HILLS might have worked as a comedy skit, but could hardly sustain a feature, and unfortunately the premise is virtually all the film's screenplay supplies. The lack of character development is particularly damaging for Long--since her character never becomes more than a cartoon, her reformation is never credible. leave a comment
