1969, Movie, R, 89 mins

This three-part, avante-garde, surrealistic comedy is hard to put a label on but is a treat for those who don't mind standard film forms being blasted like shotgun pellets. Hobbs, who wrote and directed the film in addition to using some of his artwork in the backgrounds, connects the film's sections. The subject, roughly, is the film business itself. Hobbs conducts conversations with an "Academy Award-winning" director on subjects ranging from art to popcorn, modern pop films, and gross receipts listings from "Variety." The story is told in a wild, free form that's enormous fun. The final sequence features then-NBA-star Thurmond as a "Bug-man" who serves as leader of a blue-hued civilization. Don't bother trying to figure out what it means; just sit back and enjoy this film on its own terms. It's brimming with imagination and creativity and is obviously a product of the late-1960s San Francisco psychedelic culture. leave a comment
