Silly costume adventure has Payne leading a detachment of US Marines and a company of Greek mercenary cavalry under da Silva against the marauding Barbary pirates commanded by stylish pasha Reed. O'Hara is the daughter of a French diplomat and Reed's ward, but she disguises herself as a dancing girl and crosses the desert with dashing lieutenant Payne. Pretty but mostly worthless effort from Paramount's resident B movie unit, Pine and Thomas (nicknamed the "Dollar Bills" for their low budget ways), this film takes major liberties with history and actually owes more to World War II movie cliches than the real business of the Marines putting down the Barbary pirates in 1805. Payne is adequate as the handsome hero, and O'Hara is lovely to look at, but it is da Silva, playing his mercenary captain for laughs, who steals the picture every time he appears on screen. A few scenes are effective--a march through a sandstorm and the climactic battle especially--but the whole film sinks into the same quagmire of hackneyed action and dialog that has claimed so many other films. The color photography is good, but the lush set designs and ornate costumes seem out of place on the rim of Africa, and anachronisms such as jet contrails streaking the sky and some 1940s slang these 19th-century Marines throw around are not easy to excuse. leave a comment
