A con man thriller about thieves who leave no witnesses, this picture serves as a warning that travel pitfalls extend beyond sunstroke and missing travelers’ checks. Looking for his next marks, grifter Eddie (Eric Roberts) phones instructions to partners Franklin Ross (Michael Raynor) and Lonnie Campos (Katy Boyer) to slay their current victims. Little do squabbling vacationers Tom and Gina Williams (John Ritter, Rachel Hunter) know that they'll soon have far graver concerns than whether to send their kids, Angela and Michael (Christina Ann Moore, Tyler Cole Malinger) to the video arcade near their hotel. Radiating false bonhomie, Eddie cultivates Tom’s friendship at the pool and after ascertaining that he's a wealthy executive, Eddie and Franklin drag Tom off to a strip club while Lonnie takes Gina on an all-girl shopping spree. When Tom tires of his boys’ night out, Eddie shows his true colors: If Tom wants to see his family alive again, he must complete an overnight wire transfer of his life's savings. To demonstrate his seriousness, Eddie lures a Good Samaritan to his van and murders him in cold blood. Meanwhile, Lonnie drugs Gina and keeps a watchful eye on the children. Tom senses that Eddie has no intention of letting his family live after the pay-off, so as soon as he obtains his money, Tom makes a dash for safety, leading Eddie and Franklin a merry chase. How can Tom rescue Gina, Michael, and Angela from three hardened criminals, who’ve perfected their modus operandi over the course of many brutal murders? Once the cats have caught their papa mouse, this convincingly sadistic chiller builds steady suspense; unfortunately, the carefully built-up tension dissipates because the endangered family is so bland and the denouement isn’t as gripping as it might have been. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
