Originally made for television and then released theatrically shortly thereafter, this film stars Vincent as a flower child who is inducted into the Marines, and McGavin as the tough, veteran drill instuctor who must cope with the kid. Though Vincent's hippie philosophies are clearly at
odds with the precepts of the Marines, his mysticism enables him to cope with the strain of basic training better than the other recruits, and he gradually wins the respect of McGavin. Though it's filled with a lot of hokum, the offers decent performances (especially from McGavin) and effectively
humanizes its characters.
