Tremors 3: Back To Perfection: Review
As third generation horror-flick follow-ups often do, this entry into the TREMORS series ups the ante: More monsters, more special effects, more camp. Sadly, the sum total isn't more fun. It's been 11 years since Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) eliminated those Graboids voracious, subterranean sand-worms from his hometown, tiny Perfection, Nevada. Nowadays, he's a paramilitary folk hero who travels the world sharing his wisdom in the rarified field of subterranean creature control. Gummer maintains a high-tech facility at home, just in case those wormy pests re-emerge. But his neighbors see the Graboid phenomenon as Perfection's last best chance to cash in. Shopkeeper Jodi (Susan Chuang) sees marketing opportunity; Jack Sawyer (Shawn Christian) conducts theme park tours of the terrain; and a greedy real estate developer hopes to dot the horizon with ranchettes. It only takes one Graboid sighting to make them reasses their attitudes, especially since the people-eater gobbles up Jack's partner, Buford (Billy Rieck). But just when the Perfection-ists are all on the same page, Department of the Interior officials barge in, accompanied by a paleontologist (the screenplay plays fast and loose with the back-story of the Graboids) who wants to study the creatures. Gummer regards this intrusion as an affront to local government, and getting temporarily swallowed by one of the creatures does nothing to make him feel any more kindly about them. As Perfection's residents scatter and Gummer steps up his anti-Graboid efforts, the beasts start mutating and multiplying, acquiring wings and a keen sense of human radar in the process. Even Gummer may not be able to control this freaky animal kingdom it's difficult to avoid an airborne mega-worm. A series of anti-climaxes vitiate the chills and the survivalist satire that the original TREMORS delivered with such unlikely aplomb.
