Steve Buscemi -- leading character actor of countless independent films -- takes his turn behind the camera, and it's a winner. Tommy Basilio (Buscemi) is what is commonly known as a loser: He's been fired from his job at the garage, he lost his girlfriend to his ex-boss, and he can't even cut it driving his late uncle's (Seymour Cassel) ice cream truck, because he gives kids the creeps. Tommy's also an alcoholic, and the greater part of his day is spent in a stupor on a bar stool at the Trees Lounge, chumming it up the with other not so beautiful losers. It's clear from the outset that Buscemi has seen his share of John Cassavetes films, and with his own fine ensemble cast, Buscemi 's quite capable of capturing a sense of improvisatory spontaneity -- Carol Kane's worn-out bartender and Debi Mazar's lacquered cookie in stiletto heels are superb creations. But where Cassavetes often uncovered the grotesquerie underlying such desperate lives -- usually after one round too many -- Buscemi's vison is rooted in compassion and a quirky humor that's entirely his own. leave a comment
