This somewhat effective rumination on growing old features Leo McKern as Frank, a crusty engineer who reluctantly retires upon reaching the age of 70. Tired of Melbourne city life, Frank decides to move to a seaside cottage on Australia's north coast. He's been seeing Frances, a much younger divorcee, and persuades her to make the move with him, much to the chagrin of her married daughters. At the seaside, Frank's suddenly failing health forces him to reevaluate his life and his relationships. Witty, insightful dialog and a superb performance by McKern (TV's "Rumpole of the Bailey") as the bullying old man combine to make this a warm and entertaining film. It also benefits from beautiful photography of the Australian scenery. leave a comment
