A loosely structured portrait of an aimless teenager whose future is over before it's even started. Sweet-faced, 16-year-old Ryan Kazinski (Ryan Dougherty) is serving time in the Southwest Florida Juvenile Detention Center where he spends much of his time in solitary, lost in his own his rambling thoughts. Ryan's younger brother (Jon Daugherty) visits regularly, slinging cigarettes over the fence when he isn't allowed to see his brother. Ryan is working on a community service work detail when a fight breaks out; he and several other boys make a break for freedom while the guards are occupied. Abandoned by the others at a rundown convenience shop, Ryan hangs out with some old guys, hitches home to Ft. Myers, huffs aerosol spray in a supermarket and gets beaten up in the parking lot. He also visits his brother (who chastises him for running when he only had a month left to serve), tries to buy a bus ticket, steals a gun, helps burgle a veterinary clinic (but takes only a puppy), and gets into a scuffle with the police. Most of the film is shot in an unpolished, verite-like fashion, and the actors often appear to be improvising their lines. Interspersed with these blandly gritty scenes are dreamy shots of carnival rides, eerily beautiful swamps, a young thug's tattooed chest, fish darting around in a tank and a streaky blur of roadside lights as seen through the windshield of a car. Writer-director Julian Goldberger's feature debut contains moments of haunting beauty that he contrasts effectively with the melancholy reality of his characters' wasted potential. But the film often seems as haphazard and meaningless as their lives, which makes it seem far longer than 80 minutes. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
