Rogers always made sure the cowboy story line never got stale, and this pleasing yarn is one of his best and the first done in color. Retired B-western star Holt is a great guy who sells Christmas trees at cost to families of poor kids. However, a big tree corporation comes in and starts paying off the woodcutters to drive the prices up and Holt out of business. Roy arrives and with the aid of a host of other screen cowboy friends he gets Holt's business back on its feet and the trees into the kids' houses in time for a Merry Christmas for all. The film had appearances by a host of cowboy stars including Rex Allen. A highlight of the film occurs when longtime screen bad-guy Chesebro, shunned by the other old-time players, states: "I've been a villain in Jack Holt's movies for 20 years; now I'd like to be on the right side for a change." Rogers sings out, appropriately, "Ev'ry Day Is Christmas in the West" and "Get a Christmas Tree for Johnny." The Riders croon "Home Town Jubilee." leave a comment
