Bertolucci barely tops his previous effort, LUNA (1979), in this father-son drama set in the Italian countryside against a backdrop of terrorism. Tognazzi is cast as a cheese manufacturer who suffers through the disappearance of his son, unsure (as is the audience) whether or not he has been kidnaped. As usual with Bertolucci, the film's style and bravura camerawork are clearly in the forefront, but the politics and social commentary never quite find their place. leave a comment
