Although written by Sports Illustrated's respected Frank Deford (who also penned the book upon which EVERYBODY'S ALL-AMERICAN was based) and starring Raul Julia and Beverly D'Angelo, TRADING HEARTS never saw a theatrical release and went directly to home video. A romantic comedy set in 1957, the film features Julia as Vinnie, a washed-up pitcher for the Boston Red Sox who has just been cut from the roster during spring training. Feeling sorry for himself, Vinnie hits the bar circuit, where he meets Donna (D'Angelo), a thirtysomething divorcee making a last-ditch attempt at a singing career in a local dive. Although Vinnie and Donna don't exactly hit it off, her precocious 11-year-old daughter, Yvonne (Jenny Lewis)--a baseball nut who recognizes Vinnie from her baseball cards--is determined to get her mom and the pitcher hitched. This doesn't seem likely, however, until Donna's ex-husband succeeds in gaining custody of the child, uniting Donna and Vinnie in pursuit of a common dream. The film was directed by ace sports photographer Neil Leifer. leave a comment
