TOY STORY
starstarstarstar
Kids are mad about it; it's far from painful for parents; the voice of Mr. Potato Head is Don Rickles. What more could you ask? Clever, fast-moving and unobtrusively self-conscious, Disney's latest marketing triumph describes a struggle for status between two toys -- old favorite Woody, a low-tech talking cowboy voiced by Tom Hanks, and newcomer Buzz Lightyear (voice of Tim Allen), an arrogant space ranger who threatens to upset the toy box. The mismatched heroes must team up against a vicious brat who's fond of mutilating his playthings and turning them into scary mutants. Needless to say, Woody and Buzz learn to set aside their differences and respect each other along the way, imparting a valuable lesson to viewers too young to have seen the LETHAL WEAPON films. To animation buffs and other movie nerds, TOY STORY will be remembered as the first feature-length computer cartoon. Everyone else can just enjoy -- especially Disney chief Michael Eisner, who consolidates his near-monopoly of contemporary kiddie cult. leave a comment
