A truly sublime experience for music lovers, Alain Corneau's sophisticated biography of the 17th century French musician M. de Saint Colombe is also a heady mixture of sentimental romance and complex philosophical inquiry. Gerard Depardieu, at his bloated, foppish best, stars as Saint Colombe's brilliant student Marin Marais who ruefully recalls his days as a student and the lover of his mentor's daughter (Anne Brochet).
