Tougher Than Leather

1988, Movie, R, 92 mins

After making their motion picture debut in 1985's KRUSH GROOVE, rap music's preeminent bad boys, Run DMC, return to the screen with this self-produced action film. Besides concert footage not only of the stars but also of fellow rappers Slick Rick and the Beastie Boys, TOUGHER THAN LEATHER has lots of violence and macho heroics from Run DMC (Run aka Joseph Simmons, DMC aka Darryl McDaniels, and Jam Master Jay aka Jason Mizell). The story follows the guys as they sign to perform a concert tour for Strut Productions. The group's roadie, Runny Ray (Raymond White), witnesses a drug murder backstage at a Run DMC gig and is killed himself. Run DMC put themselves on the case, and their quest brings them into contact with a parade of racist white thugs whom they coolly clobber. Taken simply as an action film, TOUGHER THAN LEATHER is something of a subpar effort. The acting is mediocre at best, the direction pedestrian, and the editing choppy; and the script centers on violence and sexism. leave a comment
