One Touch Of Venus

1948, Movie, NR, 81 mins

Anyone who was privileged to see the original play, with Mary Martin and a wonderful score of 16 songs, will be distressed by this cinematic yawn. Window dresser Eddie Hatch (Robert Walker) kisses a statue of Venus in a department store, whereupon the statue comes to life in the beautiful form of Ava Gardner. Venus' powers bring romance to the store employees and unite true lovers until, 24 hours later, she returns to her immobile state. The film suffers from a witless script, dull direction, and the excision of most of Ogden Nash and Kurt Weill's glorious tunes. The choreography is routine, while the only consistent humor is delivered by Eve Arden as a pert secretary. Gardner's singing was looped by Eileen Wilson. Tunes that survived include "Speak Low," and "The Trouble with Women." "That's Him," "Don't Look Now But My Heart Is Showing," and "My Week" (new lyrics by Ann Ronnell). leave a comment
