Illinois coal miner Morris falls in love with showgirl Kelly, eventually marrying her secretly, and, with her prodding, rises to the position of shaft superintendent. She inherits some land and he forms a new company to mine the property, but the going is tough and she reacts by having an affair with mining-rival Conway.
