Top O' The Morning: Review
The third time is often charmed when actors team up. This time it is charmless as Crosby and Fitzgerald get involved in some hokum that is so Irish you can smell the corned beef and cabbage coming off the screen. The Blarney Stone has been stolen and since it's insured by a US company, the company sends its ace investigator, Crosby, over to Erin to help find the monument. He arrives in the small town and meets Fitzgerald, the crusty local constable, and his ineffectual assistant, Cronyn. The tourist business has fallen off in the small village because the "Rock of Garrulousness" is the only reason to visit the place. Eventually, the criminal is caught and the stone is returned. Along the way, Crosby falls in love with Fitzgerald's comely daughter, Blyth. The tunes by Johnny Burke and James Van Heusen include: "Top o' the Morning," "You're in Love with Someone," "The Donovans," and "Oh, 'tis Sweet to Think." The old chestnut "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" (Chauncy Olcott, Ernest Ball, George Graff, Jr.) is tossed in, just in case you weren't sure about where the action was taking place. Sentimental, slow, and too sweet for human consumption, this film marked the final pairing of Crosby and Fitzgerald.
