Too Late Blues

1962, Movie, NR, 100 mins

John Cassavetes' first Hollywood film stars Darin as a jazz musician who loses his girl friend after not sticking up for himself in a barroom brawl. His band goes on the skids, playing music for scant audiences in parks and an orphanage. He finally gets back on the right track with both his music and his former girl friend, who has since become a hooker. Interesting mainly for its jazz atmosphere and Darin's nonsinging performance, the film features the tunes "Sax Raises Its Ugly Head," "Look Inward Angel," "The Rim Shot Heard 'Round the World," "Benny Splits While Jimmy Rowles," "Bass Canard," "Move Over," and "Drum Talk" (David Raksin), plus "A Song after Sundown," "When Your Time Comes," "Samba Do Cabeza Vermelha," "Danzon del Galante," and "Ciudad de Mexico." leave a comment
