This entertaining private-eye story features Frank Sinatra in his first hard-boiled detective role as Tony Rome, a former cop who lives a Travis McGee kind of life on his boat in Miami. One-time associate Wilke persuades Sinatra to escort home Lyon, the heiress to a huge fortune owned by her father, builder Oakland. Sinatra is hired by both Oakland and his wife, Rowlands, to find out what's behind Lyon's erratic behavior. He investigates and becomes entangled in an elaborate blackmail scheme, which he gets to the bottom of with the help of the seductive St. John--not before taking a few punches and encountering an assortment of oddball characters. A very confusing story with far too many characters, TONY ROME nonetheless paved the way for a sequel, LADY IN CEMENT (1968). Richard Breen wrote the screenplay, then died, and novelist Marvin H. Albert, who wrote the original book, came in to handle the rewrite. Sinatra enjoyed playing a detective so much that he went on to make more films in the genre, including THE DETECTIVE (1968) and THE FIRST DEADLY SIN (1980). Deanna Lund was discovered in this film and went on to star in a Fox TV series, "Lost in Space." leave a comment
