Duvall turns in one of his many virtuoso performances as a helpful, quiet farmer in early 1900s Mississippi. He takes in an abandoned pregnant girl, falls in love with her, and helps her through the birth of her child. He marries her, only to have her die just minutes after the vows are exchanged. After raising the child for a few years Duvall again suffers a loss, as his wife's kin come for the kid. The story is beautifully scripted by Horton Foote, who creates a realistic atmosphere for the era. Duvall and Foote were teamed again in 1983's TENDER MERCIES, which brought Oscars to both. Foote first wrote this story in 1960 for TV's "Playhouse 90." In 1968 he rewrote it as an Off-Broadway play starring the two leads of the film, Duvall and Bellin (the stage-actress wife of coproducer Roebling, himself a stage actor). This was a first-production effort for the team of Roebling and Pearlman, the latter a onetime publicist for Columbia. leave a comment
