Three wealthy bachelor friends, Carey, Smith, and Winninger, feeling lonely on Christmas Eve, conspire to attract guests for dinner at their home in New York City. Each leaves a wallet on the sidewalk outside their mansion, containing a business card and a $10 bill. Anyone returning the wallet intact will be invited join them for a sumptuous dinner. An unscrupulous stage actress, Vinson, finds one wallet and pockets the cash. The other two are picked up and returned by Carlson, an unemployed former rodeo performer from Texas, and Parker; over dinner they fall in love. The benevolent trio befriends the couple, and all is jolly until the three men are killed in an airplane crash. They return as spirits and are horrified to find that Carlson, who has proven to be a talented singer, is caught up in the show business world, ignoring Parker and falling prey to none other than the dishonest Vinson. Winninger has little success in getting Carlson and Parker back together, and then Vinson's jealous ex-husband shoots Carlson. He's about to die on an operating table, but Winninger appeals to The Almighty, and Carlson survives, presumably to live happily ever after with Parker. Ridiculous premise without the charm of such fantasies as HERE COMES MR. JORDAN, HEAVEN CAN WAIT, and ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER; poorly written, hammily acted, it's only saving grace is White's superb lensing supervised by Garmes, one of the world's greatest cinematographers. Garmes put together the independent company for this production which went out of business after offering such contrived pieces; Garmes was much more successful in his collaborative productions with Ben Hecht, creating such minor classics as CRIME WITHOUT PASSION, but then he had the benefit of a master scriptwriter. Songs include: "Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair" and "It's Raining Dreams." leave a comment
