Duvall turns in one of his many virtuoso performances as a helpful, quiet farmer in early 1900s Mississippi. He takes in an abandoned pregnant girl, falls in love with her, and helps her through the birth of her child. He marries her, only to have her die just minutes after the vows are exchanged. After raising the child for a few years Duvall again suffers a loss, as his wife's kin come for the kid.
