Aznavour and Riviere are French soldiers who are captured during WW II and ordered to help farm a German family's land. Riviere tricks Trantow, the farmer's daughter, into helping him escape, while Aznavour becomes increasingly more fond of the girl and stays behind. By time the war ends, Riviere has become a successful journalist and Aznavour has returned to his wife, whom he no longer loves and who no longer loves him. Aznavour decides to go back to Trantow.
