Chatterton goes outside her marriage when her husband, Ames, refuses--or is unable--to father a child. She finds Lukas, a Viennese brain surgeon, has an affair with him, and gets pregnant. She makes both men believe it is Ames' child, until years later when the boy falls from a horse. He is taken to Lukas, who saves the boy's life.
