A teenage ranch girl from Texas wins a prize at the county fair--a calf. She raises the animal, and it helps her through a battle with polio. The animal is entered in the Chicago International Exposition where it takes the top prize, much to the youngster's delight. Her mood turns sour, however, when she learns that the winning livestock are auctioned off and ultimately wind up in the slaughterhouse. A meat packer with a heart of gold comes to the girl's aid and ensures the animal's safety. Popular Chicago radio host Wally Phillips has a minor role as, of course, an announcer. Okay for kids, but there's something a bit strange about the whole premise. Songs: "Get Ready with the Ribbon, Judge," "Who Says Animals Don't Cry?" (Tommy Reynolds, William Lightfoot), andr Barbecue Rock" (Elsie Pierce Wilkes). leave a comment
