A more sympathetic treatment of Indians than normal for pictures of this era. This time the blame for unwarranted slaughter falls on prejudice from both sides. Heflin plays a scout in a Dakota fort, where he tries to convince the officers in charge that there is a way to settle their problems with the Sioux other than through bloodshed. But the tactics used by Nicol--kill as many Indians as possible--are more than Heflin can contend with. After a small band of cavalry is wiped out (known in the history books as the Fetterman Massacre) there seems to be one obvious outcome. Attempts at drawing sympathy for the Sioux include depicting the plight of Cabot, the maiden who is left alone after all her people are mercilessly killed.
