The makers of TOM THUMB put a lot of effort into providing a realistic and entertaining--for adults as well as children--adaptation of the famous Grimm brothers fairy tale, although their emphasis was almost totally on visuals and the song-and-dance routines rather than on a well-developed script. Russ Tamblyn is a charmer as the five-inch-tall Tom Thumb, jumping about with unfailing grace and bringing joy to just about everyone's heart. The villainous Ivan and Tony (Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers), however, plot to exploit his size for their own unsavory purposes. Their attempts to steal this little ball of energy from his woodcutter father's cottage and to sink him in a life of evil eventually fail, but not until a number of songs and adventures are delivered. The special effects that provide the illusion of the tiny boy's world are outstanding--good enough, in fact, to have received an Academy Award, yet another accolade for producer-director George Pal. leave a comment
