A twisty, humorous antithesis to The Grapes of Wrath and a switch from director John Ford's usual style of family bonding. Set among the "poor white trash" of Georgia's Tobacco Road area during the Depression, this beautifully shot adaptation of Erskine Caldwell's novel chronicles the struggle of impoverished Jeeter Lester (Charley Grapewin) and his wife Ada (Elizabeth Patterson) to pay the bills and keep their family together.
