If you watch only one drag-queens-on-the-road comedy this year, better you should rent THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT. Here, three insouciant transvestites (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, John Leguizamo) tool down the interstate in a '67 Cadillac, discovering an America full of good-hearted folks who just can't wait to lavish their hospitality on a multicultural carload of drag queens. Even Chris Penn, as the token bigot, is ultimately a harmless buffoon. It's hard to dislike so genial a picture about guys in gowns (although only Leguizamo would pass muster at a drag ball: Swayze seems to be doing a third-rate impression of Joan Crawford, while Snipes just comes off as a man in a dress); still, it's basically an elaborate denial of homophobia -- which is no help to anybody in a country where people get killed for cross-dressing. leave a comment
