An effective flag-waver which put the Marine Corps in the spotlight and was made with the full cooperation of that branch of the US armed services. Payne is an arrogant lad awaiting a cushy job in Washington, DC, which his girl friend Kelly is supposed to land him. In the meantime, he decides to sign up with the Marines. His smart-mouthed attitude doesn't get him very far, however, when confronted by granite-tough drill sergeant Scott. It's not long before Payne eyes a beautiful Navy nurse, O'Hara, and is destined to fall in love with her. The strict regulations of the Marines humble Payne, and he learns to accept his stay in the service with seriousness. He redeems himself in Scott's eyes when he saves the sergeant from a mishap during target practice. When Payne receives word that a job has been found for him in Washington, he readies himself to leave. Before he can say his goodbyes, however, Pearl Harbor is attacked and Payne is struck by a wave of patriotism. Although it seems cliched today, TO THE SHORES OF TRIPOLI did the job in 1942 when patriotic cliches were the most effective way to lure young men into battle. To help their cause, the Marine Corps allowed the studio use of its base in San Diego and access to the Pacific Fleet. The film is perhaps best remembered as O'Hara's first film in color--marking the audience's first opportunity to see the shimmering red hair that became her trademark. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Color Cinematography. In 1950, O'Hara and Payne made it past the shores of Tripoli and appeared in a picture entitled, simply, TRIPOLI. leave a comment
