TO GILLIAN ON HER 37TH BIRTHDAY
starstarstarstar
Morosely middlebrow melodrama about a grieving widower and an awful weekend on Nantucket Island. It's rife with pious platitudes and cringe-inducing, overwritten scenes, but they're side side by side with some truly affecting moments. David (Peter Gallagher) is still deeply in love with perfect wife Gillian (Michelle Pfeiffer), even though she's been dead for two years. He's drowning in his lavish grief, and now he's in danger of taking his 16-year-old daughter Rachel (Claire Danes) with him. His in-laws (Kathy Baker and Bruce Altman) try to fix him up, but they choose the anniversary of Gillian's death to show up with the new lady, precipitating all manner of emotional histrionics. Everything's against this play-into-film adaptation, from the karaoke singing scenes to the sand castle competition (could it be -- symbolic?) to David's comic flip-out over the sight of Rachel parading down the beach in plaid butt floss. But the cast -- especially Gallagher and Danes -- do their best to cut through the soap opera histrionics, and succeed more often than you'd imagine possible. Its flaws are magnified by the big screen: It's really the perfect rental for cold, dreary nights when all you want is a good wallow in someone else's troubles. leave a comment
