Taylor is a pilot and veteran of WW II haunted by memories of the pilots he inadvertently sent to their deaths during that war. He lives as an expatriate in Madrid and is in the midst of divorcing wife Malone despite her desperate attempts to hold their marriage together. He loses all his money when a horse he bets on throws its jockey, killing him. This, along with wanting to help his financially strapped war buddy, Lord, leads to his agreeing to participate in a currency smuggling scheme masterminded by Gabel. Taylor and sidekick Dalio evade various authorities in a long chase, but when they discover that their contraband includes narcotics, they turn it all over to the authorities and send the police after Gabel. All this action puts some of the old spirit back in Taylor; he is reconciled with Malone and goes back to his prewar occupation as an airline pilot. Competently written and directed, the film is nonetheless tedious during the scenes in which Taylor wallows in self-pity as Malone tries to hold their marriage together. It is only when the smuggling scheme and subsequent chase enter the film that any real excitement is generated, but these come too late in the story to redeem it by themselves. Taylor contributes his usual performance, adequately showing the world pressing down on him, but that isn't enough either. Malone is good but hasn't much to do, and the rest of the cast is only competent. leave a comment
