TIMOTHY LEARY'S DEAD
starstarstarstar
Devotees of the late Dr. Timothy Leary are sure to love this adulatory portrait of the former Harvard psychologist who became a '60s countercultural icon when he tuned in, turned on and dropped out, becoming an outspoken advocate of better living through LSD. True Leary-heads probably won't even mind -- or notice -- that aside from some intriguing bits of news footage and a few amusing interviews with some of Leary's acid-addled fans and cohorts, there's not a whole lot of information here. Not surprisingly, anyone hoping for a levelheaded assessment of the High Priest of Hallucinogens' actual contribution to 20th-century American culture will be sorely disappointed. Way too much time is spent watching Leary espouse his unique brand of pseudo-mystical, sci-fi cyberbabble, all laced with the kind of arrogance that only comes from a lifetime of perceived martyrdom at the hands of the Man. Well, 20 years after the Moody Blues sang it, Timothy Leary is dead -- he succumbed to prostate cancer in early 1997. And if you don't stick around till the very end, you may think the old prankster is actually dying on camera -- just before the attending surgeons saw off his head, pack it in ice and stick it in a box for cryogenic preservation.
