This film is well meaning, though ultimately little more than a soap opera. Lupino is an English woman accompanying her friend Boland on a trip to Warsaw. There she meets Polish count Henreid who falls in love with her. Despite the objections of his family, the two marry and settle on
Henreid's family farm. But war soon comes and the farm is burned to the ground by the Nazis. Henreid and Lupino know that Poland will one day rise again, however. The screenplay can't make up its mind: Is this a romance or a social statement? The result is an overlong, though well acted and
photographed, film.
